South African short-stay visa

Visitor's Visa

A visitor's visa lets foreign nationals visit South Africa for tourism, short business trips, or brief family visits. Visa-exempt passport holders may receive an entry stamp for 30 to 90 days without a prior visa application.

What is a South African visitor's visa?

A short-term visitor's visa is for foreign nationals visiting South Africa primarily for tourism or other short stays. If your passport is not visa-exempt, you must apply before arrival. If your country is visa-exempt, you may enter with an entry stamp valid for 30 to 90 days without a prior visa application.

Short stays only A standard visitor's visa is for short stays and generally cannot be converted into a longer-term visa while you are in South Africa — except in limited cases (such as spouses or dependents of South African citizens or permanent residents).

Who is it for?

Tourism & holidays

Holidaymakers and tourists exploring South Africa for a limited period.

Short business visits

Meetings, interviews, contract signings, training sessions, and conferences — not ongoing employment.

Family visits

Visiting family or friends in South Africa for a brief period.

Visa-exempt travel

Nationals of exempt countries who qualify for entry stamps of 30 to 90 days without a pre-approved visa.

Before you travel

  • Confirm whether your nationality is visa-exempt or requires a visitor's visa before travel.
  • Hold a valid passport with sufficient validity and blank pages as required by the DHA.
  • Prepare proof of purpose of visit, return travel, and sufficient funds where requested.
  • Apply from your home country or country of residence before travelling if you are not visa-exempt.

Permitted business activities

A visitor's visa allows travel for holiday and limited business-related activities only, including meetings, interviews, contract signings, training sessions, and conferences.

If you need to perform short-term work in South Africa, you may need a Short-Term Work Visa (such as a Visitor's Visa under Section 11(2) of the Immigration Act) rather than a standard tourist visitor visa.

Extensions and renewals

90-day extension

You may be able to renew or extend a visitor's visa for an additional 90 days while in South Africa, subject to your current visa conditions and eligibility.

Pending renewal

While a renewal application is pending, you may remain in South Africa legally — but you generally cannot travel outside the country after your visa expires until the new visa is issued.

Overstaying Leaving after your visa has expired may result in being declared undesirable, with a re-entry ban of 1 to 5 years depending on the length of overstay. Bans may be appealed, typically taking 2 to 4 weeks to resolve.

Longer-term visitor visas (3+ months)

Under the Immigration Act, South Africa offers categories of longer-term visitor visas for stays exceeding three months and up to a maximum of three years. These must be applied for from your home country or country of temporary residence before travelling. Categories include:

  1. Academic sabbaticals
  2. Voluntary or charitable activities
  3. Research purposes
  4. Accompanying spouses and children of temporary residence visa holders
  5. Teachers at international schools
  6. Film and advertisement production (actors, crew, and related roles)
  7. Foreign journalists assigned by international news agencies
  8. Visiting professors, lecturers, or academic researchers
  9. Artists engaged in writing, painting, or sculpture
  10. Foreign entertainers travelling through South Africa for performances
  11. Tour hosts and leaders
  12. Foreigners required to testify as state witnesses in criminal court cases

Frequently asked questions

Can I extend my visitor's visa in South Africa?

Yes, in many cases you can renew for an additional 90 days, subject to the conditions and eligibility criteria of your current visa.

What if my visa expires while my extension is pending?

You may remain in South Africa while the renewal is pending, but you generally cannot leave and re-enter until the new visa is issued. Consider departing before expiry and re-entering with a new visa to avoid complications.

Can I change to a work or spousal visa from inside South Africa?

Only if you are the spouse or dependent of a South African citizen or permanent resident. Otherwise, you must apply for a work or study visa from your home country or country of residence.

Can I work on a visitor's visa?

Only limited business activities (meetings, conferences, etc.) are permitted. Paid or short-term work requires the appropriate work visa category, such as Section 11(2) for short-term work assignments.

Do visa-exempt nationals need a visitor's visa?

No. Visa-exempt passport holders can enter with an entry stamp valid for 30 to 90 days, subject to border officer discretion and passport validity requirements.
