What is the Critical Skills Work Visa?
The Critical Skills Work Visa allows qualified foreign nationals to live and work in South Africa in occupations
listed on the official Critical Skills List published by the Department of Home Affairs (DHA). It offers a
streamlined pathway toward permanent residency and is typically valid for up to five years, with renewal options.
Key benefits
- Valid for up to five years, renewable within South Africa once fully issued.
- Path to permanent residency once permanent employment is secured (subject to relevant work experience).
- Dependents — spouse and children — may accompany the principal holder on dependent visas.
- Applications from 18 October 2024 onward are assessed under a points-based system (qualifications, salary, experience, language, Trusted Employer status).
Who qualifies?
Your occupation must appear on the latest Critical Skills List (2023/24). Common categories include:
Engineering
Civil, mechanical, electrical, and related engineering disciplines.
Healthcare
Doctors, specialists, nurses, and other medical practitioners.
Technology & finance
IT professionals, software developers, financial analysts, and auditors.

SAQA evaluations
A Ministerial Waiver allows applicants who can prove they have submitted a SAQA evaluation application to apply for
a Critical Skills Work Visa issued for 12 months while the evaluation is processed. After successful completion and
submission of the SAQA certificate, the visa may be renewed for the full five-year period.
