Who needs a study visa?
Foreign nationals who wish to study in South Africa must apply for a study visa before arrival and meet the study visa
criteria. Two groups typically require this visa:
Primary applicants
Those who wish to study in South Africa — whether of dependent age or to further their education at any level.
Dependent children
School-going children accompanying parents on another temporary visa who need to attend school in South Africa.
Study period of more than 3 months
Any foreign national (including minors) planning to study for more than three months must hold a study visa before
entering South Africa, unless already on a qualifying temporary residence visa.
Application documents
A complete study visa application typically requires:
- Valid passport with at least 6 months validity from your scheduled return date, and at least 3 blank pages at submission.
- Letter of acceptance from a registered South African learning institution.
- Proof of sufficient financial means (bank statements covering tuition and living expenses).
- Police clearance certificate (applicants over 18).
- Medical and radiological reports.
- Proof of accommodation in South Africa.
- Proof of medical insurance valid in South Africa.
- Completed DHA-1738 application form.
Work rights on a study visa
Holders of a valid study visa may work part-time — up to 20 hours per week during academic terms and
full-time during vacations — provided the work does not interfere with studies.
