What is a Permanent Residence Permit?
A Permanent Residence Permit allows a foreign national to remain in South Africa indefinitely, subject to
permit conditions. The Department of Home Affairs assesses applications against specific categories in the
Immigration Act and Regulations. Foreign nationals who contribute to South Africa's economy, skills base,
or social development are valued applicants — but understanding the correct category before you apply is
essential for a successful outcome.
Permanent residence is not citizenship
Citizenship may be applied for after holding a permanent residence permit for at least five years while
living in South Africa. PR and citizenship are separate legal statuses.
Who qualifies?
You may be eligible to apply under several categories, including:
Critical Skills holders
Applicants who hold or qualify through a Critical Skills Work Visa pathway, subject to DHA category requirements.
General Work Visa (5+ years)
General Work Visa holders who have worked in South Africa for at least five years may qualify.
Business Visa
Business Visa holders planning to establish or expand a business in South Africa.
Financially independent
Financially independent individuals or retirees who meet prescribed capital thresholds — including the financial independence category (typically requiring net assets of R12 million or more, per current DHA guidance).
Spouse or life partner
Spouses or partners of South African citizens or permanent residents — married or in a partnership for at least five years.
Other direct categories
Additional categories exist under the Immigration Act; your route depends on your current visa status and circumstances.
Can family members apply?
Certain family members of South African citizens or permanent residents may also qualify:
Spouses and life partners
Must prove a legal marriage or cohabitation in a committed relationship for at least five years.
Dependent children
Children under 18, or financially dependent adult children, may be included where the category allows.
Close relatives
First-level kin may be eligible under specific circumstances as defined in the Regulations.
